Research Topic – Terry Fox
October 17, 2006 by nicols28For my English class I have been asked to write a research paper on just about anything that I am interested in and wish to know more about. Firstly I feel that I should give a brief background of myself so your able to understand why I have chosen this research topic.
I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario Canada and I have lived there my whole life. I am extremely proud to be Canadian and growing up hereyou are exposed to many great individuals that have not only affected our countries history but have also been leaders for others. One of the most influential people in the last 50 years has been Terrance Stanley Fox.
Terry Fox was born in 1959 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was diagnosed with bone cancer and had his right leg amputated 15 centimetres above the knee. He believed that a cure for cancer could be found through cancer research but more funds were needed. Terry began what he called the Marathon of Hope which started in Newfoundland, Canada. He ran 26 miles a day for the next 142 days until the cancer had spread to his lungs and he died.
I have chosen Terry Fox for my research paper because he inbodies an unbreakable spirit and remarkable courage that I feel Americans should know more about. I am going to be researching what type of cancer he had, what where and how did he run across Canada, how much money he raised, and most importantly why do most Americans not know about him while every year in Canada we have a Terry Fox Run.
